ABOUT OUR PROJECT

Motivation

  • General art is worthless, our art is literally made out of money ($$)

  • Streamline the process to create art through automation

  • Utilize engineering knowledge and skills to fabricate machine

  • Penny art is one application of a CNC place system

  • The goal is to sort a uniformly sized object, a penny, by its color and dispense it to the appropriate locations

  • This can be extended manufacturing lines and more

Challenges

  • Interfacing an Arduino with our machine for motor control

  • Determining tolerances of components using a (SLS) Selective Laser Sintering 3D Printer with Nylon 12 plastic

  • Creating a hexagonal pixel grid to make a close-packed image. However, in the end we decided to use a square pixel grid

  • Handling thin pennies (0.06" in thickness)

  • Expensive "cheap" art (bought 2,500 pennnies = $25 which was 14 lb.)
